Someone recently asked… well if your blog is called ‘Mental Health Destination’ you should do a blog about finding mental health destinations. It was a fair point- so I thought it’d be fun to explore this! I’ll be using the word retreat and destination interchangeably but they’re the same thing in my mind.

MENTAL HEALTH DESTINATIONS ARE NOT ONE SIZE FITS ALL

Before choosing a mental health retreat, it’s important to figure out what your needs are because not all retreats are created equal. For example, some people may need access to licensed professionals like therapists or doctors. Some people may be looking for spiritual guides and a lot of time to practice yoga. Others might be looking for a place to find quiet, be unplugged from technology, and read and rest. Some might want guided psilocybin retreats (it’s a thing!), while some people choose mental health destinations/retreats that offer services like detoxification from alcohol or other substances. Another question to ask yourself is are you looking for a program that offers a schedule or are you seeking a place to be that promotes mental wellness while managing your own itinerary?

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A MENTAL HEALTH DESTINATION?

Mental health retreats often emphasize holistic well-being, may incorporate physical activities such as yoga and hiking, and provide nutritious meals that support overall health. These elements not only improve physical wellness but also contribute to a renewed sense of energy and motivation. The skills and practices learned during a retreat, such as mindfulness, coping strategies, and communication techniques, can be sustained long after the retreat ends, leading to lasting improvements in mental and emotional health. Mental health destinations can provide a break from the constant demands of work, family, and technology which can improve mental clarity and reduce stress. Overall, a mental health retreat can be a transformative experience.

WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN LOOKING FOR A MENTAL HEALTH DESTINATION

I have never been on what I would call a Mental Health Retreat, however, if I were going I’d consider a bunch of different factors. Here’s a list of key considerations.

1. Location and Accessibility

  • Proximity to Nature: Do I want to choose a location that offers a serene, natural environment in the mountains or the beach? What about on a lake?
  • Accessibility: Is this location easily accessible for me? How far is it? Could I drive or would I fly? Considering travel distance, transportation options, and the physical accessibility of the site for those with mobility issues.

2. Privacy and Seclusion

  • Privacy: A secluded location might help you feel safe and free from distractions, allowing you to unplug and focus on your mental health.
  • Group Size: How many people are at this retreat/destination? Do I feel comfortable if it’s a co-ed retreat?

3. Facilities and Accommodations

  • Comfortable Accommodations: Ensure the accommodations are comfortable, with amenities that support rest and relaxation, such as comfortable beds, clean bathrooms, and cozy common areas.
  • Wellness Facilities: Consider locations that offer wellness facilities like meditation rooms, yoga studios, spas, or swimming pools.

4. Healthy Food Options

  • Nutrition: The availability of healthy, nourishing meals that cater to various dietary needs (vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, etc.) is important for supporting mental and physical health during the retreat.

5. Atmosphere and Ambiance

  • Tranquil Environment: The ambiance should promote peace and calm, with minimal noise pollution and a welcoming, warm atmosphere.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Consider the aesthetic qualities of the location, such as beautiful landscapes, well-designed interiors, and calming décor.

6. Climate and Weather

  • Seasonal Considerations: Choose a location with a climate that will be comfortable during the retreat. Avoid extreme temperatures or rainy seasons unless these conditions are integral to the experience.
  • Outdoor Activities: Consider the weather conditions for planned outdoor activities like hiking, nature walks, or beach time.

7. Safety and Security

  • Safety: Ensure the location is in a safe area, free from natural hazards, and that there are measures in place for the physical security of all.
  • Medical Accessibility: Consider proximity to medical facilities or emergency services, especially for participants who may have specific health needs.

8. Cultural and Spiritual Significance

  • Cultural Fit: Choose a location that aligns with the cultural or spiritual aspects of the retreat if applicable, such as a place with historical or spiritual significance.
  • Respect for Local Customs: Ensure the retreat activities are respectful of local customs and that participants are aware of cultural norms.

9. Cost and Budget

  • Affordability: Consider the cost of accommodations, meals, activities, and transportation to ensure it fits within the budget of the retreat.
  • Value for Money: Ensure that the location offers good value, with the amenities and environment justifying the cost.
  • Insurance: some mental health destinations are credentialed with insurances, they are usually classified more like residential facilities, but can help foot some of the bill potentially. To be covered by insurance, you often have to meet a certain level of medical necessity.

10. Availability of Professional Support

  • Therapeutic Services: If the retreat involves therapeutic activities, ensure that licensed mental health professionals are available or that the location has access to such services.
  • Workshops and Activities: Consider the availability of facilitators or instructors for workshops, yoga, meditation, or other activities that may require professional guidance.

Have you ever been to a mental health destination? What was your experience?
